Produced by Markham Arts for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Sacre: The Auckland Dance Project is a significant contemporary dance project celebrating youth and showcasing the diversity of cultures in Auckland. Working with over 150 young people choreographer Royston Maldoom created a spectacular dance piece that was performed in October 2011 to music played live by the APO.
A first for New Zealand, the project created an opportunity for Auckland young people to work with Royston; a choreographer known internationally for his large scale works with children and young people. With a long standing passion for engaging young people in dance, Royston is sought after around the world.
Participating schools were Kristin Senior School, Tangaroa College, Mt Albert Grammar School, Pakuranga Intermediate, Hay Park School, New Lynn School and students for the University of Auckland Dance Studies.
The creative team working alongside Royston included Volker Eisenach (Berlin), Taiaroa Royal, Moss Patterson, Ann Dewey, Megan Adams and Marama Lloydd (NZ). This team ensured that Sacre had a distinctive Maori and Pasifika interpretation.
“Royston Maldoom and this project will leave their legacy on all who took part in it. Its impact will extend well beyond those 30 or so minutes in the Aotea Centre.” – William Dart, Herald Online
